About us

Willie van der Walt started this business in 1995 on a small boat that could only accommodate six people. On a visit to the Victoria Falls, he experienced a river cruise on the Zambezi. This experience encouraged him to build a bigger boat that could accommodate up to 35 people. And from this Jumbo River Safaris was born.

Now the time has come for the younger generation of the van der Walt family to carry forward the business that their father worked so hard to build.

Jumbo River Safaris is a boat that cruises on the Olifants river(south of Phalaborwa better known as the town of two summers) which has both braai and toilet facilities on the boat.

The boat drives past the Klaserie which is the largest privately owned game reserve in the world. The Klaserie is open to both theTimbavati Game Reserve and the Kruger National Park with no fences separating them.

Tourists are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets with snacks and drinks on the boat. We will provide the fire for those who wish to experience a traditional South African braai on the boat in the comfort of the African bushveld.

The lowveld region, where the cruise takes place, enjoys the highest winter temperatures in South Africa ranging from 11°C at night to 25°C during the day with very little rainfall during the winter months. April to October is this regions dry months in which you will find many animals at the rivers and water holes.

During summer the average temperatures vary from 20°C to 47°C with occasional heavy rainfall. November until March is also this regions green season due to the heavy rainfall in which the bush is lush and you will be able to see many newborns.
