Assagay Forest Lodge ~ 1000 Hills. South Africa Empty Assagay Forest Lodge ~ 1000 Hills. South Africa

The suburb of Assagay is situated just 5min out of Hillcrest and 20min from Durban. Being within just 2km of both the M13 highway and N3 free-way means it's quick and easy to get to and from Durban, or the King Shaka International Airport. Assagay is well known as an area for nature lovers with a mixture of small-holdings, expansive homes and more recently town house complexes that give the area it's country charm.

On the plateau on the sides of which Assagay lies, is Alverstone. Boasting a one time small private airfield, the small area overlooks Hillcrest and and on a clear day offers views right to the brilliant blue of the Indian Ocean just 35km's away. Alverstone is home to a number of small holdings as well as a conservancy that houses a small selection of antelope.

Situated in what has become known as Outer West Durban, Assagay, also sometimes spelt Assegay, lies just north west of Hillcrest beyond the Toll-gate, when coming from the centre of Durban. This part of the world is greener and cooler than Durban, and given over to rolling hills that rise consistently up to Botha´s Hills  after which they descend into the gorgeous Valley of 1000 Hills.

Assagay, together with its pastoral neighbours - Botha's Hill, Alverstone, and the horsy spots of Summerveld and Shongweni - are collectively regarded as 'country living'. People commute from here to either Durban, Pinetown or Pietermaritzburg rather than live in the more congested cities. Despite the obvious development of rambling properties and luxury town house clusters, it is still a more peaceful and green existence that not only allows a slower existence, but gives people a much needed break from the heat that can envelope Durban.

The sweeping green hills, synonymous with KwaZulu-Natal, pine groves, green valleys, rivers, streams and open pasture-land are attractive, and it is a beautiful part of the world in which to stay, particularly as your access to town is so good. You can understand why the area is so sought after.

And there is plenty to do and see whilst in Assagay. Head up the Valley of 1000 Hills via Botha's Hill to the Rob Roy hotel, which has been here for decades - tea in the gardens is a must at the top. The views over the valley are sumptuous. Drive the 1000 Hills Experience Route, along which you can visit artists, crafters, a crocodile and snake park, three cultural villages all of whom feature Zulu dancing, and more. Ride the 1000 Hills Choo Choo, which leaves Kloof station and travels to Cato Ridge on weekends, or visit the Assagay Coffee farm in Lello Road, Botha's Hill, to enrich your taste for coffee.
